Spring Flowers - all about colour and bendy stems
From January onwards we start to see these graceful and often fragrant flowers are a welcome change to the colours of winter. Many spring flowers are short and have flexible stems that need support or manipulation. Here are our favourites!
Tulipa - Not originating from Holland, but from Turkey. These wonderfully bendy flower come in a range of colours and varieties. If you are using them in bouquets look for a 40cm minimum stem. They can keep on growing and will always turn towards the sun. Our favourite is the Parrot tulip with large multi-petals.
Ranunculus - commonly called the Persian Buttercup. Delicate and with a soft stem they are at their best as we head into March. For a large head flower look for the Kloons!
Narcissi - common name Daffodil. There are so many varieties, but particular favourites are the small headed (Jonquil) and heavily fragrant varieties. Always leave alone in a bucket of water for 24 hours before using. This draws the sap out of them that can be toxic to other flowers. A symbol of strong women and often included as part of International Women's Day.
Mimosa - Part of the Acacia family this yellow fluffy flower is only available until March. Use it while you can. Often found in the foliage section at the wholesalers.
Remember that spring flowers are shorter than many other varieties. They are best in water and need to be recut every few days and placed in fresh water.
