During the weeklong Floristry Career Course, one of the days is focussed solely on funeral flower designs. This is a crucial area of floristry, but often people approach it with trepidation, worried that it may not be an uplifting area of floristry to work in and that the designs will be restrictive and lack creativity. We can honestly say this couldn’t be further from the reality.

It’s truly an honour to be asked to create funeral flowers, and it’s one that all the tutors from the school have valued in our time as florists. You’re given the responsibility of creating a floral design that represents both the deceased person, and the love that the family or friends had for them.

There are so many different techniques to funeral flower work. Whether it’s learning how to base a traditional heart, or letters to spell out a name, this skill can be applied to any shape or dedication. There are also wreaths, sprays and garlanding a coffin or working with fully compostable designs for woodland burials, all of which have different mechanics to learn.

Funeral work often involves a level of creativity that you aren't always given in other commissioned work, and it gives you the opportunity to create a design that will help to bring comfort at a difficult time. As one of our students remarked on a recent course, the flowers are one of the glimmers of light in an often difficult day.

If you want to learn more about funeral floristry, we offer a two-day course that covers many of the techniques required to create beautiful floral tributes. Find out more here https://www.thecambridgeflowerschool.co.uk/collections/funeral-design or call the school on 01223 655661 to discuss with one of the team.
